Learning to Quiet Judgement While Continuing to Love
My mom taught me a few things. By watching her, I learned that I didn’t want to be negative. My mom Edna was one of the most negative people I’ve known. If she were a cartoon character, she would have been drawn with a persistent black cloud over her head. She was also very dramatic. -
When Life Throws a Curveball, Hit It Out of the Park
Life is a series of surprises, heartaches, joys, tragedies, renewals, and redirections. If you remain flexible--even through the curve balls--you can navigate it all. If not, you may find yourself in a struggle. I think I am a little of both. I know that my transitory childhood taught me to be flexible, and I’ve used that skill where I’ve needed it most--being a mom. -
It's Not About Where You Are, It's About Who You Are With
We would also spend the Fourth of July on the lake. The coolest thing to do was sit at a window seat in any of the high-rise restaurants that had a view. A large barge would go out to the middle of the lake and at sundown and start shooting off fireworks. -
Letting Your Girlfriends Know You're There
I have always had many friends. I grew up moving from place to place, sometimes multiple times in a year. I went to several elementary schools and was always the “new girl.” None of this ever stopped me from making friends. Unfortunately though, those girlfriendships didn’t last as long as I had wished because my mom packed us up and moved me often, sometimes 100 miles away.

Be Sure to Eat Lots of Fruits and Vegetables
Up until I was 26, the only “vegetables” I ever ate were baked potatoes, corn on the cob, or corn out of a can. My mom was a waitress and was always working, so didn’t spend much time in our kitchen. When Edna was in our kitchen, she was not concerned with nutrition. -
Being on Time and Monday Mornings
Monday. It’s a new day, a new week, chance to start over. Yeah, Friday nights are definitely high on my list, but my all time fave are Mondays, in particular the morning. I love the renewal. The reset. The recharge. -
Making the Most of Trying Times, and a Special Birthday
I pride myself on being a quick thinker. A “quick to-react-or”. A motivator. An always-in-motion gal. So when the coronavirus crippled us, I looked for ways to let the light shine in. Amongst the many strategic efforts I made during this pandemic, the one that will last a very long time is our Thursday Zoom happy hour. -
Harvesting a Garden of Different Gifts
Once September rolls around and we harvest the herbs from those boxes, I start my next labor of love. I put the rosemary in a large mason jar and combine it with olive oil and garlic to make an incredible fusion of flavor perfect for cooking or dipping. I’ll also use the rosemary and combine it with lavender along with lemon zest, jojoba oil and sugar for a shower scrub. -
Another Show to Make Us All Wiser
When the craziness of COVID-19 crisis started, it was necessary to find entertainment within our homes. The new normal for so many of us was to wake up and exercise early in the morning, clean out closets and drawers during the day, sit down for a family dinner, then gather around the TV to start a new Netflix series at night. -
The Love You Carry Inside Will Last a Lifetime
The love you carry inside will last a lifetime--if you nurture it. Whether your own love shows up through a skill, a hobby, a relationship, a pet...you can only keep it alive by intentionally tending to it. Caring. Sharing. Growing. Laughing. Cooking. Conversing…. -
A Smile Usually Generates Another Smile
My husband Pete had traveled to Hawaii with his dad, mom, and three brothers once a year since he was ten years old. After we were married I joined the tradition, and once we had kids, they came along too. -
Diving into the Waters of Girlfriendships
Summer heat in Sacramento can be unbearable, even late at night. From June until September it was common for the temperatures to reach 100°. Even the nights were hot. My friends and I had two choices for our, um, activities: either stay inside and blast the air conditioning, or go outside and look for a source of water.
