What’s Happening with State Fairs in the Midwest?

As I shared in Monday’s blog, my love for state fairs goes back to my childhood. Sadly, the majority of these state fairs have been canceled due to COVID—unless you’re in the Midwest (like I am)! I did some checking, and some states are doing them virtually (in what we now know as the true pandemic style these days), allowing us fans a way to still be a part of state fair activities.

South Dakota and Nebraska are on with COVID precautions. Iowa is using their fairgrounds in an entirely different way, and Michigan and Minnesota creatively going virtual. Check ‘em out!  (Side note: If you don’t see your state mentioned here, it’s because it was held before this blog was published, or there wasn’t a COVID-related alternative.)

Minnesota

  • For their 12 day event running now through Labor Day, you can view their content from the home page of mnstatefair.org or via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube! They also released special State Fair kits and 2020 merchandise… Learn more!

Iowa

  • Though it’s not their traditional event, that didn’t stop Iowa from scheduling some fun! On Friday, September 11, 2020 the Iowa State Fair along with sponsor Sleep Number and media partner Life 107.1, announced a live, drive-in concert performance by Christian duo, For King & Country. The event will be held in the North parking lot of the fairgrounds. Gates will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will begin at 8 p.m. Buy tickets for you and your girlfriends here.

Michigan

  • Michigan sure used their creativity on this one! This year it will be a free, online virtual fair. If you and your friends “attend” this one, you’ll have fun experiencing the hourly social media posts bringing you contests, activities, historical facts, live demonstrations, performances, and so much more! Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. Great job Michigan! Catch it September 3 - September 7.

Nebraska

  • Yes! Nebraska’s State Fair is on! Buy tickets here, then head over to Fonner Park, Grand Island now through September 7. There are COVID rules, but that’s to be expected. It will still be a great way for you and your friends to close out summer.

South Dakota

  • Another yes! Starting September 3 and ending on Labor Day, Huron is the place to be.  The South Dakota State Fair is bringing you some fantastic events, and implementing COVID precautions to keep you safe. Click here to buy tickets.
