Go on a Girls Getaway on Virginia's Chincoteague Island

A popular saying in Virginia is: “Virginia is for lovers,” and that’s because lovers of all kinds are welcome here! Out East in Virginia, your mountain-loving girlfriend, your beach-loving girlfriend and your wine-loving girlfriend will have the opportunity to experience what they love. In Virginia April showers do not bring May flowers. Instead, they usher in a hot summer! June-September may be the best months to visit because of all the unique activities Virginia has going on.

What to Do

Chincoteague Pony Swim  | Calling all animal lovers! That would, unquestionably, be me and most of my girls. Made famous by Marguerite Henry's "Misty of Chincoteague", the annual pony swim takes place at the end of July. You’ll want to be there for the week to enjoy all the fun!

  • Weekend before: Saltwater Cowboys begin to round up the approximately 150 adult wild ponies that live on Assateague Island.
  • Monday: Gather along the beachfront and watch the ponies make their way along the water’s edge during the Beach Walk. Bring snacks, water, and bug spray to enjoy this special event with your tribe.
  • Wednesday: The Saltwater Cowboys swim the ponies 14.5 miles from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. The main public viewing area is Veterans Memorial Park

Blueberry Festival  | While you await Wednesday’s Pony Swim, head over to the to visit 100+ fine artists and crafters, grab a bite to eat and listen to live music. You will love this “Christmas in July” type of shopping extravaganza. You and your gals will surely find treasures at the largest fine arts and crafts events on the Eastern Shore of Virginia!

The Fireman’s Carnival  | The best things in life seem to come in threes, especially on Chincoteague Island with The Pony Swim, The Blueberry Festival, and the Fireman’s Carnival.  It boasts a variety of food, games, rides and fun, live entertainment! The Chincoteague Island is full of energy during these events which is why it is such a phenomenal spot to spend time together.

Where to Stay

The Island Manor | Do you and your girlfriends like the idea of a bed and breakfast? I recommend this one. It’s located in the heart of historic downtown, and is walking distance to everything there—restaurants, shops, and amazing views. They offer an exquisite breakfast, and will even pack you a beach lunch on request if you and your girls want a day by the water. After a long day exploring, you all can hang out in one of their common spaces and talk about the highlights before heading off to rest up for another fun day.

Anchor Inn | If a hotel is your preference, this prime, waterfront location is elegant and inviting. The balcony off of your room is the perfect spot to sip a morning coffee and tell each other stories while enjoying the view. If you book and pay in advance, you’ll receive a special 15% off your entire stay.
