Girls Weekend Getaway to Charming Newport Rhode Island

Girls Weekend Getaway to Charming Newport Rhode Island

Sip some wine (or tequila) with your girlfriends in the sailing capital of the world, and the perfect destination for your next girls weekend: Newport, Rhode Island. In the heart of Rhode Island's “classic coast” you can choose your own adventure. If you’ve never been to Newport, it’s time to go! As Edith Wharton stated perfectly in The Age Of Innocence, “Newport represented an escape from duty into an atmosphere of unmitigated holiday-making.”

Where to Stay

  • Hotel Viking

The historic Hotel Viking in downtown Newport is a local institution, offering travelers easy access to the bars and restaurants of Thames Street, while still providing an elegant respite from the bustling city streets. If Hotel Viking’s prime location doesn’t have you sold, then the incredibly comfortable beds, impeccable service, and luxurious bathtubs should do it. You’ll sleep soundly there after all of your big adventures. You can’t beat the rooftop deck and charming afternoon tea.

  • Beach Cottage at Castle Hill Inn

Hoping to experience an oceanfront retreat that's removed from the action of downtown Newport? Look no further than fhe Beach Cottage at Castle Hill Inn. Perched on the sand dunes overlooking the hotel's private coastline, these cottage rooms are also walking distance from the hotel's popular bar and restaurant.

  • The Chanler at Cliff Walk

Go back in time with your girlfriends! Our final selection, The Chanler at Cliff Walk, was first built in 1873 as a summer home for Congressman John Winthrop Chanler and Margaret Astor Ward. The 20-room, European-inspired hotel offers a taste of how the other half once lived, and is just steps from the historic Cliff Walk.

What to Do

  • Take In Historic Architecture

Newport is a breathtaking mix of historic architecture blended with dramatic coastal cliffs. The best way to appreciate those views is from the city’s famous Cliff Walk. That path begins at The Chanler and winds along the coastal edge of the lavish properties that were built for America’s aristocracy at the turn-of-the-century. Curious travelers should consider signing up for a tour of these iconic estates, such as The Elms, The Breakers, or the grounds of Rosecliff (the setting of the Grace Kelly film, High Society).

  • Top off the Trip With a Sunset Sail

Newport has a stunning sunset and there is no better way to watch this phenomenon than aboard the luxury Schooner Adirondack II. Let their crew cater to you while you sit back and relax, enjoy some refreshments, and take in the memory of a Newport sunset that will last a lifetime. Snap some amazing photos of you and your girlfriends for your social media feed, or to be framed for the mantle.

Where to Eat and Drink

  • Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard

Now owned by Carolyn Rafaelian, founder of Alex & Ani jewelry, Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard will be one of your favorite places to hang out on a summer weekend. They have an outdoor cafe, multiple tasting rooms, and a beautiful lawn next to the vineyards.

  • The Roof Deck at Grace Vanderbilt

The Grace Vanderbilt is a luxury boutique hotel in downtown Newport with elegant touches like a spa and indoor and outdoor pools. Even more posh than the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking, the Roof Deck at Grace Vanderbilt is both hip and chic and welcoming to the yacht crowd or visitors from the city. Just be sure to go during the week for less of a scene, and arrive before six to beat the crowd. The menu here is definitely more limited, so best to go for cocktails and light bites like arancini, truffle fries, oysters and s’mores.

You and your girlfriends are sure to have a charming weekend soaking up all that Newport has to offer! If you’re looking to bring the flavors of Rhode Island home, try our recipe for Rhode Island-style clam stuffies and a Rhode Island Red Cocktail.
