Girlfriendship Cycling and Chillin’ in Maine

Have you figured out all six New England states yet? Well, here we go to another: Maine. Remember what happened back in March, 2020? No, not that. It was Maine’s bicentennial! We at My Girlfriendships® think it’s never too late to party, so how about we celebrate now?

Here’s some trivia for My Girlfriendships cat aficionados. The official state cat (who knew there were official state pets?) is the Maine Coon, said to be the most chill cat there is. So, in honor of the state pet, let’s do some girlfriend chillin’ in Maine. This week it’s to Portland (nope, not the one in Oregon. That was last week), and Bar Harbor.

Portland

Close to the southern tip of the state, the largest city in Maine is ideal for you and your crew. Here are two fun things to do while you’re there.

What to Do

  • Summer Feet Cycling Adventures  |  Remember when we visited Portland, Oregon, and you read that it has more bicyclists than any other city in America? Well, bicycling is big in Portland, Maine as well. What a fun way to spend the day, cycling along the beautiful coast of Maine with your crew. Summer Feet will set you up with everything you need. All you need to do is pedal!

  • Victoria Mansion  |  Tell us, who’s not curious about how our girlfriends once lived? We sure are! That’s why we think your girl’s trip should include a visit to this beautiful structure to see how life was in the early part of our nation’s history.  We hear that the Christmas season is particularly stunning. Check out their Insta.

Where to Stay

  • The Pomegranate Inn  |  A one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast, the Pomegranate Inn is a “visual treat” in Portland’s Western Promenade—the historic West End district of downtown. With eight rooms filled with art, color, character, and personality, their goal is “to both charm and exceed all expectations”. We know you can be almost anywhere with your besties and it’ll be memorable. The Pomegranate Inn will give you the perfect backdrop.

  • The Inn at St. John | The Inn at St. John was built in 1897, making it the oldest, continually-operating hotel in Portland. The Inn was built by railroad tycoon John Deering to accommodate passengers from the train station that was originally across the street. The Inn at St. John is a truly unique experience of Victorian charm in a relaxing atmosphere.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is another great spot to get away with your girls...if you’re into beautiful coasts, incredible views of nearby islands, towering mountains, national parks, restaurants, shopping. Yep. That’s what we thought. Here’s what we suggest for fun.

What to Do

Acadia National Park is a must-see when in the Bar Harbor area of Maine. 2300 acres, 26 mountains, 120 miles of hiking trails, 26 lakes and ponds, 338 species of birds...it’s a magical place. Just about anything we suggest will include something in or by it.

  • Kebo Valley Golf Course  |  No matter what your age, your group will really enjoy golfing at the oldest golf course in Maine, and the 8th oldest course in the U.S.! It sits on the edge of Acadia National Park, so the terrain is varied and glorious. finding a tee time was so simple—we just used their online scheduler. Put this one on your list of fun!

  • Cadillac Mountain  |  The highest point on the East Coast, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is a do-not-miss. It’s a 2-3 hour hike to the top, or if you’d rather, you can take the car for the scenic 3.5 miles to the summit. Just be sure the driver keeps her eyes on the road! The views are magnificent. Regardless of how you get there, take in at least one sunrise. It’d be the perfect start to your day.

Where to Stay

Staying in Bar Harbor? Here two suggestions:

  • Emery’s Cottages on the Shore  |  Can you imagine the fun? 18 cottages located on the shores of the beautiful Frenchman Bay. This cozy spot is just two miles from Acadia National Park and five miles to downtown Bar Harbor, putting it in an ideal location. Kayaking, BBQs, picnic tables, outdoor games, and lawn furniture—perfect for your crew. Girls, are you ready to start planning for the peace and relaxation of a traditional Maine waterfront cottage vacation?

  • Balance Rock Inn  |  You have to click the link and look at their website. This place is a premier, 27 room boutique hotel offering the best of it all. It’s private, scenic, historic, and yet modern. Close to downtown for the indoor fun of shopping and restaurants, minutes from Acadia National Park for the great outdoors. Perfect.

Whaddya say friends? Let’s go!
